For a single 4K video clip from an iPhone 16 Pro (often 500 MB to 2 GB for a few minutes), WhatsApp will compress, iMessage may work but re-encode, and a transfer service keeps the original bytes.

Android's file picker tends to show more filesystem locations than iOS's, which helps if your file is inside a sandboxed app folder. Some budget phones have aggressive battery optimisation that suspends browser uploads — disable optimisation for your browser during long uploads.

Cellular vs Wi-Fi

  • Check you're on Wi-Fi if you care about data usage.
  • Disable "Wi-Fi Assist" (iOS) or "Cellular data switch" (Android), which silently fall back to cellular when Wi-Fi is weak.
  • If you must use cellular, enable low-data mode to stop background sync from fighting for bandwidth.

On a 5G standalone network, real-world upload speeds are 30-200 Mbps. LTE tops out around 20-50 Mbps up. Hotel Wi-Fi is often worse than cellular.

Battery and heat

Long uploads are CPU-active work. An iPhone pushing a 5 GB video over Wi-Fi can warm noticeably and drain 15-25% battery. To avoid thermal throttling (which slows the upload):

  • Keep the phone out of direct sun.

HEIC and file format headaches

iPhones save photos as HEIC by default, which some Windows and older Android recipients can't open. Options:

  • Change iPhone settings: Settings > Camera > Formats > "Most Compatible" (saves as JPEG going forward).
  • Convert on send: Settings > Photos > "Transfer to Mac or PC" > Automatic (converts HEIC to JPEG on transfer).
  • Send raw HEIC and tell recipient to use a modern viewer (recent Windows with HEIF extensions, macOS, Linux with libheif).

Videos are usually HEVC on iPhone — most modern recipients handle it, but older PCs sometimes don't.

Same-room transfers skip the internet

Between two iPhones or an iPhone and a Mac: AirDrop. Between two Android phones or an Android and a Chromebook: Quick Share.
