Dropbox shared folders, Dropbox Transfer and temporary transfer tools solve different jobs. Choose a shared folder when collaborators must work on changing files over time. Choose a transfer link when delivering a finished export that recipients should save independently. Dropbox Transfer itself supports that second workflow; recipients do not need a Dropbox account.
Compare the right limits
Dropbox's official Transfer documentation currently lists 2 GB for Basic, 50 GB for Plus and Family, and larger limits for other plans. These are transfer limits, not your cloud storage quota. Basic, Plus and Family links expire after seven days. Dropbox separately documents a delay between expiration and deletion from its servers: an expired link is not evidence of immediate erasure.
A practical decision
For a design project, use shared storage for drafts and permissions, then send the approved export with a transfer link. A one-time 4 GB delivery exceeds Dropbox Basic's documented transfer allowance; an existing paid plan may already cover it, so compare your current subscription before paying for another service. HexaTransfer can deliver that size without an account, but cannot replace shared folders, version history or collaborative editing.
Before sending, confirm the total size, the recipient's download deadline and whether ongoing access is needed. Test the recipient flow with a harmless sample. Do not infer end-to-end encryption from the words AES-256 alone: what matters is who has the key. Infomaniak documents SwissTransfer encryption during transport and on its servers; that is not evidence of the browser-key design used by HexaTransfer.
HexaTransfer in practice
HexaTransfer is a free, account-free tool for occasional deliveries up to 50 GB. Links expire after 14 days by default; choose 1–30 whole days when creating the transfer; keep your own copy. Files and their names are encrypted in the browser with AES-256-GCM. The browser generates a random key and puts it after # in the share link. Send the complete link only to intended recipients: anyone holding it can decrypt the transfer, subject to any additional password protection.
The optional password controls access at the server; it does not derive the encryption key. Keep the tab open until the link appears, and allow enough disk space when downloading. Uploading does not remove the original file.
