File transfer benchmark: a reproducible method

A useful benchmark must be repeatable and distinguish observations from estimates. This page provides a protocol you can run; it does not report new experiments or certify a fastest provider. The previous numeric rankings are removed because their measurement records are unavailable.
Prepare the comparison
Choose one nonsensitive file small enough for every plan being compared. Record its exact size and checksum locally. Note device, operating system, browser, network type, region, date and plan. Use the same recipient device for each download and record upload and download separately.
Record complete results
Run several trials under comparable conditions. Preserve the individual timings, errors and retries before calculating a median and range. Stop download timing only after the file is saved; open it and compare the local checksum. Never upload private content or a decryption key as benchmark evidence.
Do not extrapolate across file-size limits, mix different plans or discard slow failures silently. Label arithmetic estimates clearly. Publish the protocol and nonsensitive measurement records before making a provider ranking. A single trial cannot establish universal performance or an encryption-overhead percentage.
HexaTransfer in practice
HexaTransfer is a free, account-free tool for occasional deliveries up to 50 GB. Links expire after 14 days by default; choose 1–30 whole days when creating the transfer; keep your own copy. Files and their names are encrypted in the browser with AES-256-GCM. The browser generates a random key and puts it after # in the share link. Send the complete link only to intended recipients: anyone holding it can decrypt the transfer, subject to any additional password protection.
The optional password controls access at the server; it does not derive the encryption key. Keep the tab open until the link appears, and allow enough disk space when downloading. Uploading does not remove the original file.
